Lucy was pretending to write a story on a piece of paper (making marks on it) which she said was about bubblegum and trick or treating.

Cut short by arrival of Grandma Virginia and Nanu. The kids had fun telling them about our vacation, showing off their paper dolls, etc.

Bella made an apple pie for dessert, with a lot of help from me. As we worked she talked about books she’s read and made all sorts of connections with ideas.
Friday October 12
Sophie: math, copywork, Geography.
Ben: math, copywork, Explode the Code, Bob book. (He’s moved on to Box 4 of the Bob book, a leap forward in terms of difficulty. A few pages per day instead of a book a day. But the great thing is he’s rising to the challenge (with the help of a little candy to ease the way.) Today’s copywork I took from the beginning of Little Bear. He copied and then we read it. And then I showed him where it was in the book and he read it again. And then, as if inspired by his achievement in reading in a Real Book, he looked around the room and read some words off some boxes and off the fan.
Anthony: math, copywork, History. Reading about Alexander the Great dying and leaving his empire to be fought over by his generals including Ptolemy who founded the dynasty in Egypt. Talking about why his empire did not endure but the Roman empire did. Was it the speed of expansion? The lack of time to consolidate power and for inculturation?
Bella joined in talking about the opening of Japan and how it was different than the experience in China and we also talked about the British colonies in South Africa and India and again speculated on the reasons for the difference. So I guess a lot of connecting the dots and thinking about empire and government and history and colonization. So many connections. For copywork Anthony has been copying an Emily Dickinson poem: Will There Really Be a Morning? He’s been doing about a line a day. And evidently has been memorizing as he goes. Today he finished copying and then recited the whole poem for me from memory. I was pretty impressed. I can tell Sophie’s habit of memorizing the poems she copies has been a great model for him to follow. (To prove the point Sophie recited The War Song of Dinas Vawr by Thomas Love Peacock.

The girls and I went to the grocery store and did the week’s shopping.
Because of the shopping our stories were curtailed. We only read Miss Happiness and Miss Flower and St Louis de Montfort.
Bedtime: Winnie the Pooh: In Which Kanga and Roo Come to the Forest and Piglet Gets a Bath. Inspired by Sunday’s trip to the Museum of Fine Arts exhibit of the Art of Pooh (about which exhibit I hope to post shortly), I’ve decided we probably need to read more Pooh. It was fun to have the kids looking at the book and exclaiming: we saw that picture!!!
