Yuki and the One Thousand Carriers by Gloria Whelan illustrated by Yan Nascimbene
Another book to add to our Japanese picture book rabbit trail. A delightful find about a little girl whose father is a provincial governor in Japan and must travel from Kyoto to Edo on the Tokaido Road. She is told by her tutor that she must write a haiku a day. Beautiful illustrations, a lovely story about a journey to a new place. Gorgeous watercolor illustrations inspired by the work of the Japanese printmaker, Hiroshige. A nice peek into ancient Japan with all sorts of delightful details about daily life.
