When Nature Comes to Call

When Nature Comes to Call

Just after Dom came home this evening I found a tick on Sophia’s head. Ick!!! I’d thought it was just some matted hair and bent to investigate and found lots of legs. I freaked out, never having seen a tick before, despite years of camping trips and backwoods hiking as a child. It was bigger than I expected.

Good thing Dom was here. I carried her over to him; he calmly pulled it off. Fortunately it hadn’t embedded yet. I’m not sure I could have dealt with the situation had he not been here. It’s his job to deal with bugs.

I have no idea how it got on her, though. We only went out briefly this morning to the dairy to pick up some milk. Perhaps it crawled on her blanket when I set the car seat down and had been lurking there all day waiting to crawl on her. Or maybe it came in on Dom’s bag and jumped over to her as he made his way through the kitchen. In any case, I now have the creepy crawlies and extreme paranoia. I thought they were things you picked up out tramping in the woods, not crawling in your house!

In related news, earlier this week my sister’s roommate was dismantling a bookcase and found a bunch of egg sacks on the bottom of the shelf with baby spiders crawling out of one of the sacks. A minute later a mama black widow came crawling out of the books. At least we don’t get those things round here!
