Field trip day. We drove down to Mattapoisett for a Shakespeare class/beach day organized by a friend.

We arrived early for a picnic lunch. As we ate we watched a pair of grey catbirds fluttering about among the tables, scavenging food. They were very bold and not very afraid of people, swooping quite close, perching on the tables. Sophie and Bella were entranced.

Our group is studying As You Like It in preparation for attending a performance later this summer. Today we talked about Shakespeare and introduced the play, reading a synopsis. Then the kids played a game in which they had a character’s name taped to their back and had to ask the other players yes or no questions to determine which character they were.

After our class the kids headed to the beach for some splashing and swimming. Sadly, four out of five kids received multiple abrasions from barnacle covered rocks within the first ten minutes of arriving at the beach. That cut short the swimming, but they still played in the tide pools and on the rocks. Bella found some crabs and put them in a bucket. She also collected some great shells. Sophie dug a pit and Ben tried to keep it filled with buckets of water. Anthony leapt on the rocks while Lucy wandered about. They played with friends and had a great time.

On the way down and back we listened to The Last Battle. I love Patrick Stewart’s reading of this book.

For our bedtime story we read The Bard of Avon, keeping up the Shakespeare theme for the day.
