I guess my learning notes blog posts have been pretty popular. GeekLady asked me if I’d be willing to host a link up so that we can all share our weekly learning notes and that sounds like a fabulous idea to me. So here’s the place where you can put in your link and share what kinds of learning have been happening in your family in the past week.
My format tends to be to do a big brain dump all in one weekly post, but if you want to do multiple posts throughout the week, feel free to post links to them all. This link up will stay open through Friday and then hopefully a new one will appear next Saturday.
So feel free to write about anything learningish that you’ve accomplished. It can be a one-off like that one cool conversation you had or book you read or video you watched or field trip you went on or it can be a catalogue of the whole week: the nuts and bolts notes about which math pages your kids did, all the geeky science projects completed, the maps colored, and the piles and piles of books they consumed.
You don’t have to be a homeschooler to participate. All kinds of learners are welcome.
Please do post the link to the specific blog post and not to your blog in general. Please link back to this post in your post. And please feel free to share and invite others to join in.
[inlinkz_linkup id=445505 mode=1]Ok. I’m going to have to do something else about the linkup widget. In the meantime please feel free to post a link to your blog post in the comments. Then when I get the widget sorted out, I’ll let you know.
What a great idea! I only wish I had a blog so that I could join in. I always look forward to your learning notes and I hope others join in as well. Thanks for taking the time to type them up and share them every week.
Thank you, Danae. I love having an appreciative audience to share them with.
I’m not seeing a widget. Am I missing something?
Nope. I’m just being hopeless. Oh and after everyone has written up such nice notes too. I feel like such a slacker. But that’s the point. This is a guilt free linkup for slacker homeschoolers. No guilt! Not even when the linky widget doesn’t work!
So what happened is I gave up on the widget in frustration but forgot I’d set the post to auto publish. And then it went live without the widget and Dom told me it had and I said, “Ugh. I don’t care enough to do anything about it right now.” I meant to deal with it last night afte the kids were in bed but Lucy refused to go to sleep until 10. 10!!!! And then Dom wanted to watch the new Dr Who and I didn’t want to miss it. And then it was too late and Dom went to bed and couldn’t help me and my brain was fried anyway. So I’ll try again with the widget tonight.
Oh but I also am way overdue on turning in my letter of intent to homeschool. Maybe that should take priority over blogging? So they don’t do something legal at me for having truant kids? I’ll try to do that and then deal with the widget. I promise. But no guilt! That’s the point. No guilt. We just muddle through as best we can.
Count me in! I am rebooting the blog under a new name, and it’s just going to be mom stuff and odds and ends I’m interested in. Keeping tabs on how Philomena’s learning this year of homeschooling will be a lot of fun!
Yay! I’m so glad you can join us. And happy to have you blogging again.
I’m not seeing the widget either.

Yay!
No worries on having a widget. People can just leave links in the comments?
Here’s mine, I happened to post this morning! Good timing ๐

yay! So happy to have you joining us, Ellie. Perfect timing.
I’ll chime in with my “stuff that’s working” post from last weekโincorporates a lot of our recent lessoning. ๐ http://melissawiley.com/blog/2014/09/04/stuff-thats-working-2/
Lovely idea, Melanie!
Oh goodie. Thanks for joining in, Lissa.
I wish I could take credit, but I was talked into it. Lots of virtual arm twisting. But I do think it will be fun, fun, fun. Like the old days of blogging, right?
I feel really bad about the linkup issues you’re having too. ๐
Thanks. Mostly, I’m being lazy and not Dealing With It. Maybe tomorrow. I’m too tired tonight after a four hour playdate at the playground.
[…] Melanie has begun a link-up for sharing daily learning notes, always an engagingย topicย (if you’re anything like me). I used to have an entire side-blog for my daily notes, and then a different one, and then a different one. These days I’m tracking things on paper, but I do like to compile some of our best resources and rabbit trails here pretty often, as you know. […]
[…] hope will be even better. Join us in the Guilt Free Learning Notes Linkup at Melanie’s blog The Wine Dark Sea! The linkup widget isn’t working yet, but that doesn’t matter, because these notes are […]
I finally remembered what we did last Tuesday! Hurray!

Who needs widgets anyway!! You actually inspired me to start doing this before there was any mention of a linkup, Melanie, and it has made me feel SO. MUCH. BETTER. about what we are getting done throughout the weeks! https://journeyjournalblog.wordpress.com/2014/09/09/learning-notes-sept-2-5/
Wonderful. I love your notes and especially your focus on understanding one thing well. Thank you so much for joining us.
I think this is a great idea, Melanie. I’m a newish reader (I hopped over here a couple of months ago when you published your piece on “Homeschooling is like Cooking”, which I loved. It was also great to see your learning notes! Here are mine from last week:

Angela, Thanks for joining in. I very much enjoyed reading your notes.
I just updated and expanded the Guilt Free Learning Notes I cribbed from my Evernote homeschool journal, which tends to be very terse and mostly a way of making me feel better by tracking that we’re doing SOMETHING.
Here they are! http://aerinlissar.blogspot.ca/2014/09/sept-1-no-screen-time-all-morning.html
I love that you start with ‘no screen time all morning’! I had a huge victory today in that David didn’t ask to watch anything till dinner. And dinner was Late, 7:45ish.
Hah! It was something we slipped into over summer- girls wake up early, I put on Pixar or Studio Ghibli, and it meant a steady slide from video to video for the rest of the way. It was putting me into child avoidance mode, because if I start the day with them all hypnotised it’s hard to recover and start reading and playing. So when the school year began I was determined to stop. And we did, and it’s been relatively okay except when I would like to shower alone and I have three people helping.
I’m trying to make it only between 12:30-4:00, but I NEED a break because of the two non-napping toddlers. I have to pin them down for at least an hour (about how long they’ll watch a video).
Non-napping toddlers are their own special kind of crazy. I don’t know how people who shower in the morning deal. I have always showered at night because I’ve never been a morning person and always resisted getting up early enough before school (and later work) to shower. If I had to keep kids occupied so I could shower, then I’d definitely be much less resistant to screen time.
Yay for doing SOMETHING. Doesn’t it feel better when you write it all down?
It does. When I track our progress it feels much less hopeless, because I see the incremental learning happening. And today I think I’m going to break the no screen time rule in the morning, because we’re going to be out all day at my parents, and then out for lunch and the museum, and I need half an hour to get dressed and ready. Nat has agreed that we can go to the ancient Egyptian parts to see the hieroglyphs and the mummy, because that was Story of the World last night. i’ll be huddling at the other wall. I hate mummies. I am a wimp.
I am at least as creeped out by the incorruptible saints. Too many zombie movies when i was a kid.
That makes sense. I suppose it’s easier to break out of the screen time rut when you’re leaving the house anyway.
I rather like mummies. Until I think of the real person. Then it seems rather wrong that they are in a museum on display and not properly buried.

Yay!
Oh hey look, there’s a widget now! Only took me till Wednesday. But now that I’ve got that sorted out, it should work for the new linkup that I’ll post on Saturday. Feel free to add your link to the widget, but don’t feel you have to if you don’t want to bother. It will make it easier for people to follow all the links to all the blog posts. Much less messy than this comment box, I do hope.
