from The Book of Questions
by Pablo Neruda
translated by William O’Daly

Tell me, is the rose naked
or is that her only dress?
Why do trees conceal
the splendor of their roots?
Who hears the regrets
of the thieving automobile?
Is there anything in the world sadder
than a train standing in the rain?

I thought I owned this book. I went to look for it on the shelf and it wasn’t there. But on reflection I think I bought it and gave it to my mother. I think I need to get a copy for myself.
