First Heralds, a Belated Announcement

First Heralds, a Belated Announcement

I’ve been remiss in writing about a fabulous new group blog founded by the UK Bookworm, who has honored me by asking me to contribute.

First Heralds is a blog dedicated to helping teach toddlers and preschoolers the Catholic faith. It has a great list of contributors and I’m thrilled to be involved and am looking forward to great things from all my fellow bloggers.

The title was inspired by this section in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

Through the grace of the sacrament of marriage, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children. Parents should initiate their children at an early age into the mysteries of the faith of which they are the “first heralds” for their children. They should associate them from their tenderest years with the life of the Church. (CCC 2225)

  • Since my now 7-year-old daughter inherited her height (or lack thereof) from my side of the family, she still uses a step-ladder to help me cook. We started with simple things—stirring and dumping in measuring cups full of ingredients. Now she helps enough that for some tasks she actually uses my Henkel knives! Cooking together has helped her expand her foods and is helping with math skills too. She is learning to work with fractions when we double or halve recipes. She now has several kids’ cookbooks, an apron, and cooking tools of her own!  I think I’ll miss something when she is tall enough to help without the step-ladder!
