Miriam Webster gave me a definition with several parts:
(2) marked by a concern for material interests and respectability and a tendency toward mediocrity
I would tend to give O’Connor the benefit of the doubt and from context read the connotation of the word to be not in the first definition of social class, but in the second definition, a state of mind frequently attributed to that class. Thus if you have a quarel with the word, perhaps you misunderstand the sense in which it is used—from my tenure on the web I have witnessed definitional questions to be the source of many conflicts between otherwise like-minded people
