How we met and how we got engaged
Melanie's mom said that people may be interested in reading about how we met and the manner in which we got engaged. I had written about this earlier on my own blog, so I'll just link to that here. Obviously, these are from my point of view; Melanie's version of the stories would undoubtedly be different and if she cares to she can write about it here.

Some thoughts on marriage in the Catholic context
Song of Solomon 2:16
"My beloved is mine and I am his."
--------------------
In the Western Church, the priest does not "marry" people. He is the witness to, not the minister of, the Sacrament of Marriage. The ministers of the Sacrament of Marriage are the husband and life, who give the Sacrament to each other. This mutual self-giving love is the most vivid earthly image we have of the mutual self-giving love of the Blessed Trinity and of the love Christ has for his Church. It is light years from the secular picture of Marriage as a "contract" where each party has to guard its "rights." In Marriage we give ourselves completely as Christ gave himself completely. Any vision of Marriage less than this is not the Christian vision. Today, thank God for his total gift of himself to us and ask him to give you the grace to give your life away for his sake!

More thoughts on marriage
Ephesians 5:24-27
"As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish."
--------------------
Pope John Paul II tells us that Marriage--in addition to being for the fruitfulness found in bringing into the world and nurturing new human beings made in the image of God--is also ordered toward the "healing, perfection, and exaltation" of the spouses. Husband and wife are to be "subject to one another out of reverence for Christ" not "subject to one another in a dog-eat-dog struggle for power." Christian Marriage is intended by God to build us up and make us means of sacramental grace to each other, our children and the world around us. Today, ask God to pour out his grace on the world through the Sacrament of Marriage.

Melanie's shower
We had Melanie’s wedding shower on Saturday, June 25. It was fun and fairly low pressure, especially since it wasn’t a surprise. We determined that there was no way to keep it a surprise and bring her mother, sister, and friends into town without her knowing. Plus it was just easier to plan if we all knew what was going on.
Anyway, we gathered at what will be our new apartment together, which is where Melanie has been living for the past five years. Her roommates have already moved out so now we’re making it our own. We were given some very nice gifts that will help us establish our new household. Thank you to everyone who either came or sent a gift.
