Learning Notes Week of March 5, 2018

Creativity with math manipulatives: Ben says only one blue bear survived the assault on the castle.

Monday March 5

Started the day as refugees at my sister-in-law’s house. We had breakfast, packed our bags, and left by about 11. Drove home, had lunch, kids tidied up the toys and clothes that had been left scattered since Friday night. Then they all feel to playing with the new Lego sets. Since I was still fighting with pain and exhausted, I didn’t even attempt any school work, not even read alouds. (I pondered read alouds briefly and then decided we all needed a break.)

Five kids, five Lego kits, quiet and mess and happy kids.

Tuesday March 6.

Anthony did math, copywork, read from Saints Lives.

Ben did math, copywork, Explode the Code.

Sophie did math, copywork, French, Geography.

Bella did math, copywork, Latin, oral composition.

Read alouds: Sword Song, Book of Angels, St Margaret Mary, Door in the Wall. Everyone took at least a short turn narrating. Book of Angels was especially rich about the Book of Revelation. In St Margaret Mary we had the promises of the Sacred Heart.

Anthony and I worked our way through a review of confession, using a little booklet I have. He’s ready for his first confession, has been for a long time. I just need to schedule a time.

At dinner we had a great conversation about economic principles, starting with a discussion of scarcity and apples and ending with a discussion about value that included why people might opt for the more expensive choice, such as why one would choose an iPhone or othe Apple product instead of a cheaper model. From apples to Apples. Sophie especially seemed excited by the ideas, she loves having big ideas to chew on.

Bedime story: Dom read Castle Diary.

Ben is putting together Anthony’s new Lego kit while Anthony is giving him pointers. (Anthony already put it together.)
